Lower Extremity Venous/Arterial Doppler
Peace Arch Cardiovascular – Bellingham, WA
A Lower Extremity Venous/Arterial Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic test used to evaluate blood flow in the veins and arteries of the legs. At Peace Arch Cardiovascular, our team uses advanced Doppler ultrasound technology to detect circulation problems that may lead to pain, swelling, blood clots, or other vascular conditions.
This test helps physicians identify issues early and develop the most effective treatment plan to support healthy circulation.

A Doppler ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize blood flow through the vessels in your legs. Unlike standard ultrasound imaging, Doppler technology measures how blood moves through arteries and veins, allowing providers to detect blockages, narrowing, or abnormal blood flow patterns.
There are two primary types of lower extremity Doppler studies:
- Venous Doppler – Evaluates blood flow in the veins and checks for conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or venous insufficiency.
- Arterial Doppler – Examines the arteries to identify circulation problems such as peripheral artery disease (PAD), arterial narrowing, or blockages.
Both tests are painless and do not involve radiation.
Why Your Doctor May Recommend This Test
Your provider may recommend a Lower Extremity Venous or Arterial Doppler if you are experiencing symptoms such as:
- Leg pain or cramping during activity
- Swelling in the legs or ankles
- Cold or numb feet
- Skin discoloration or slow-healing wounds
- Varicose veins
- Sudden leg pain or tenderness that may indicate a blood clot
Doppler imaging can also be used to monitor known vascular conditions or evaluate circulation after certain procedures.
What to Expect During Your Exam
A Lower Extremity Doppler ultrasound is a quick and comfortable procedure typically completed within 30–60 minutes.
During the exam:
- You will lie comfortably on an exam table.
- A clear gel will be applied to the skin on your legs to help transmit sound waves.
- A small handheld device called a transducer will be gently moved over the area being examined.
- The ultrasound system records images and measures blood flow in the vessels.
The procedure is completely non-invasive, and you can return to normal activities immediately afterward.
Benefits of Doppler Ultrasound
Lower Extremity Doppler testing offers several advantages:
- Non-invasive and painless
- No radiation exposure
- Highly accurate evaluation of blood flow
- Helps detect blood clots and arterial blockages early
- Supports timely treatment for vascular conditions
Early diagnosis of circulation problems can help prevent serious complications and improve long-term vascular health.
Schedule a Vascular Evaluation
If you are experiencing symptoms of poor circulation or have risk factors for vascular disease, a Lower Extremity Venous or Arterial Doppler ultrasound can provide important insights into your vascular health.
