What Is an Echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram (often called an “echo”) uses high-frequency sound waves to produce moving images of the heart. A small handheld device called a transducer is placed on the chest. The device sends sound waves into the body, which bounce off the heart and return to the transducer. A computer then converts these echoes into detailed images displayed on a monitor.

This test provides valuable information about:

• Heart chamber size and structure
• Heart valve function
• Blood flow through the heart
• Strength of the heart’s pumping action
• Potential damage to heart muscle

Because echocardiograms do not use radiation and require no surgery, they are considered a very safe diagnostic tool.

Why an Echocardiogram May Be Recommended

Your cardiologist may recommend an echocardiogram to help diagnose or monitor a wide range of heart conditions. It is commonly used when patients experience symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, or irregular heartbeats.

Echocardiograms can help detect:

• Heart valve disease
• Congenital heart defects
• Heart failure
• Cardiomyopathy
• Blood clots within the heart
• Fluid buildup around the heart (pericardial effusion)

They are also frequently used to evaluate how well the heart is functioning after treatment or surgery.

What to Expect During the Test

A standard echocardiogram is a simple outpatient procedure that typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.

During the test:

• You will lie comfortably on an exam table.
• A technician applies a small amount of gel to your chest to help the transducer move easily and improve image quality.
• The transducer is gently moved across the chest to capture images of the heart from different angles.
• The images appear on a screen and may be recorded for later analysis by your cardiologist.

Most patients experience no discomfort during the procedure and can return to normal activities immediately afterward.
